94 Points for 1694 Classification from Wine & Spirits
The February 2016 Wine & Spirits includes a great review of the Rust en Vrede 2011 Stellenbosch 1694 Classification. Here it is, from Editor & Publisher Joshua Greene:
94 points | Rust en Vrede 2011 Stellenbosch 1694 Classification
“This blend of Shiraz and cabernet sauvignon is named for the year of the estate’s founding. The vineyards grow on north-facing slopes at the base of the Helderberg Mountain, a warm site shielded from the southerly winds. While the fruit is ripe, it still clearly frames shiraz’s peppercorn spice and cabernet’s fresh, dark herbal character. And though it’s ambitiously oaked and powerful, with plenty of alcohol to fill out its structure, that structure is fine, the tannins maintaining a fierce integrity, the flavors delicate enough to carry notes of fynbos, delivering the scent of the Cape’s distinctive flower kingdom to the world.”-Joshua Greene.
The 1694 Classification is named for the year the historic Rust en Vrede estate was founded, soon after the Dutch East India Company first brought winegrowing to the southern tip of Africa.
Earlier, the 2011 vintage of this wine received a score of 93 points from Wine Spectator.
