Jean Engelbrecht: South Africa’s Wine Ambassador
What makes South Africa such a special wine country? At the recent Wine Experience, the Wine Spectator turned to Rust en Vrede proprietor Jean Engelbrecht to tell South Africa’s remarkable story and share a tasting of the winery’s 1694 Classification Stellenbosch 2007.
“We have come a long way since 1994, when we became a fully fledged democracy and the doors of the world opened to us,” Engelbrecht said. A new generation of young winemakers came to fore, bringing an awareness of international wine styles and new growing and production practices.
“The U.S. gave us a second chance,” Engelbrecht went on. “If you look at the wines that have come from South Africa in the last five or six years, anybody who has followed our wines for the last 20 years knows there has been a huge change — there’s been a huge improvement in our wines.”
