Vinous Reviews Rupert Wines
Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media, with Stephen D. Tanzer as Editor in Chief, has published new reviews of several wines from the Anthonij Rupert portfolio.
Anthonij Rupert Wines 2009 Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Franc
Drinking window: 2017 – 2024
Dark red. Musky red berries, plum, cedar, tobacco leaf and chocolate mint on the nose. Rich, refined and voluptuous, showing a sexy touch of dried herbs to the silky flavors of currant, chocolate, licorice, tobacco leaf, graphite and cedar. Finishes plummy, rich and long, with serious dusty tannins that should ensure a long life in bottle. This should be a even mellower drink in another few years. Production was 24 barrels in this “great year,” said Robertson, vs. just 4 in 2008.
Anthonij Rupert Wines 2009 Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Sauvignon
Drinking window: 2018 – 2026
(As of 2011, this wine will be almost entirely made from Franschhoek fruit): Bright ruby-red. Deeper pitched and a bit more roasted on the nose than the 2009 Cabernet Franc, showing a slightly dehydrated quality to the aromas of blackcurrant, plum, cigar box, graphite and herbs. Plush, silky and sweet in the mouth, conveying a liqueur-like ripeness to the flavors of red fruits, violet, coffee, mocha and pencil shavings. Finishes large-scaled and long, with lush, broad, dusty tannins. Comes across as sweeter and oakier than the Cabernet Franc, but without quite that wine’s refinement.
Anthonij Rupert Wines 2008 Anthonij Rupert Blend
Drinking window: 2017 – 2024
(14.7% alcohol; a blend of 40% each Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc with 20% Merlot, from what sales and marketing manager Gareth Robertson described as “a good average year, in a rather feminine style”): Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Medicinal black fruits, licorice and mint on the nose. At once sweet and savory on the palate, with flavors of dark berries and brown spices dominating. Finishes distinctly dry, with a medicinal reserve. Not at the same level of texture or depth as the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon or Franc bottlings.
Anthonij Rupert Wines 2007 Anthonij Rupert Blend
Drinking window: 2015 – 2021
Bright ruby-red. Cherry, plum and nutty oak on the nose. Round and silky in the mouth but with a slightly herbal coolness and good rather than outstanding depth to its currant, cherry and licorice flavors. Finishes with dusty, slightly edgy tannins and good length. Well-made but a bit tart on the aftertaste. Two thousand seven was the first vintage for this wine, and a cooler year than 2008, according to Gareth Robertson, who noted that this bottling is only released when it’s ready to drink.
Anthonij Rupert Wines 2010 Anthonij Rupert Optima
Drinking window: 2015 – 2020
(A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc): Healthy dark red. Inviting aromas of plum, raspberry, mocha, cola, leather and nutty oak. Plush on entry, then a bit green in the middle, with the wine’s slightly edgy acidity and new oak element currently impinging on the red fruit flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins and a leathery note. Will this harmonize with a couple more years in bottle?
