Spectator ‘Daily Pick’: Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah
Rust en Vrede was a leader in bringing Syrah/Shriaz to prominence in South Africa, and the winery’s success with the grape is reflected again in the Estate Syrah’s selection as a Wine Spectator “Daily Wine Pick” for April 22, 2015. Here’s the tasting note included with the selection:
RUST EN VREDE Syrah Stellenbosch Estate Vineyards 2012
Gorgeous, with a range of red currant, black cherry, dark plum and raspberry fruit, finely stitched with anise, black tea and singed iron notes. The long finish lets an echo of charcoal weave in and out while the fruit stays on-point. Rock-solid. Drink now through 2020. 3,950 cases made. —James Molesworth
After the Engelbrecht family purchased Rust en Vrede in 1977, it became the first private winery in South Africa to specialize in the exclusive production of red wines. In the early 1980s it then became the first producer in South Africa to make a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, with varietal Shiraz and Syrah bottlings to follow.
