Grand Tour Offers Great Taste of South Africa
Great wines from around the world – including a trio from the Terlato Wines South Africa portfolio – will be opened for tasting tonight as the Wine Spectator Grand Tour kicks off in New York City at the Marriott Marquis.
Anthonij Rupert, Rust en Vrede and Ernie Els will all be there, pouring some of their tastiest selections (scores and tasting notes from James Molesworth):
- 2009 Anthonij Rupert Optima. 90 points. “Presents an old-school feel, with roasted cedar and bittersweet cocoa notes surrounding a well-hewn core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit. A loamy edge marks the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.”
- 2010 Ernie Els Signature. 90 points. “Offers a smoldering edge, with black tea and tobacco notes weaving around the core of dark currant and plum fruit. Presents a tightly focused finish, accented by a sanguine hint. Should open more with a touch of cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2017. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,500 cases made.”
- 2009 Rust en Vrede 1694. 94 points. “Densely packed, with dark currant, fig and blackberry notes, lined with a strong charcoal edge, this is impressively rendered, delivering a muscular feel through the bramble- and ganache-filled finish.Cuts a broad swath, but the tarry spine pins everything together. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2015 through 2020.”
After tonight’s tasting the Grand Tour moves onto Washington, D.C., on Thursday night, and concludes on Saturday in Las Vegas. More information is available here.
